Bermuda grass is a warm season grass that has low water requirements during the summer. Bermuda prefers full sun and warm temperatures. Bermuda will spread via rhizomes and stolons, which means it will grow places that you may not want it to grow or it will grow where you’ve never been able to grow anything previously. Bermuda is a warm season grass that will go dormant or turn brown after the first killing frost. The dormancy period will last through out the winter, the Bermuda will start to actively grow and slowly turn green when ground temperatures are maintained at 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The typical dormant period in the middle and east Tennessee areas is mid October through April. The optimum mowing height for Bermuda is ½” to 1”. This grass can form a heavy thatch layer and may perform better after vertical cutting or de-thatching in the spring. Apply a complete fertilize in the spring and nitrogen applications can be performed monthly, throughout the growing season. Contact a lawn care professional for specific fertilize quantities.

Water must be applied during periods of drought. Fescue can lose color during summer months if water is withheld. The optimum mowing height for fescue is 2” during fall and winter months and 3” to 3 ½” during summer months. Tall fescue forms little thatch. A complete fertilize can be applied in the spring and fall. Applying fertilize during the summer months is not recommend.

Hybrid Bluegrass is a cool season grass that is green through out most of the year, much like fescue. Hybrid Bluegrass was developed to withstand the heat of summer better than traditional bluegrass varieties. Irrigation is a must during summer months to maintain a quality lawn. Mowing height for Hybrid Bluegrass is best at 1” to 2” and fertilize applications are recommended for spring and fall.
